Zcash’s Shielded Pool Hits $1.7 Billion as Ironwood Upgrade Closes a Cryptographic Gap

Zcash’s shielded pool, the privacy-preserving side of its network, has now grown to roughly $1.7 billion in value following the activation of its long-awaited Ironwood upgrade.
What Ironwood Actually Changes
Zcash offers two ways to hold and transact: a fully transparent pool that works similarly to Bitcoin’s public ledger, and a “shielded” pool that uses zero-knowledge proofs to hide transaction details while still letting the network verify that no coins are being created out of thin air. The Ironwood upgrade specifically strengthens the cryptographic guarantees behind that shielded pool.
The centerpiece of the upgrade is a new proof system that Zcash’s developers say formally rules out a category of undetectable counterfeiting bugs, a theoretical class of flaw that could, in principle, have let someone create shielded coins without anyone else on the network noticing. Ironwood doesn’t fix a known, exploited vulnerability — it closes a category of risk that privacy-focused cryptographic systems generally have to account for by design.
