XRP Ledger’s Next Upgrade Adds Confidential MPT Privacy Feature

The next major update to the XRP Ledger is putting privacy front and center, a first for a network thats historically kept every transaction fully visible on-chain.

The upcoming xrpld 3.3.0 upgrade includes five proposed amendments covering privacy, payments, token management, and settlement, with a feature called Confidential MPT standing out as the headline addition. Confidential MPT adds zero-knowledge-proof and elliptic-curve encryption-based privacy to Multi-Purpose Tokens, allowing transaction details to stay confidential while still remaining verifiable on-chain.

Like other XRP Ledger amendments, Confidential MPT requires formal validator approval before activating on the network, following the Ledgers standard governance process for protocol-level changes rather than being unilaterally deployed by any single party.

Multi-Purpose Tokens are XRP Ledgers native framework for representing a broad range of tokenized assets beyond simple payments, and adding confidential transaction capability specifically to that framework signals growing interest in supporting institutional use cases where transaction privacy is a genuine requirement, not just a preference.

Zero-knowledge-proof-based privacy has become an increasingly common approach across blockchain networks looking to balance confidentiality with verifiability, letting a transaction be proven valid without revealing its full underlying details to every network participant.
