What Is an Extended Public Key (xpub) and Why Does It Matter?

Is there a way to let someone, or some software, see every address and transaction in your wallet, without ever giving them the ability to spend a single coin? That’s exactly what an extended public key enables.

What Is an Extended Public Key (xpub)?

An extended public key, commonly abbreviated as xpub, is a special type of public key that can generate an entire sequence of individual public keys and addresses for a hierarchical deterministic wallet, without ever exposing any private key information. Sharing an xpub lets another party or piece of software view all past and future addresses your wallet will use, entirely from public information.

How Is an xpub Different From a Single Public Key or Address?

A single public key or address corresponds to just one specific destination within your wallet. An xpub, by contrast, is the master public key for your entire wallet structure, capable of deriving every individual address the wallet generates, exactly what powers the watch-only wallet functionality covered elsewhere in this Academy.

Why Would You Ever Want to Share an xpub?

Sharing an xpub is commonly used to set up watch-only monitoring on a separate device, letting you check balances and transaction history conveniently without exposing your actual spending keys to that device. Some accounting or portfolio tracking tools also use an xpub to automatically monitor wallet activity across all of its addresses.

What Are the Privacy Considerations of Sharing an xpub?

While an xpub cannot be used to spend funds, sharing it does reveal your entire wallet’s transaction history and balance to whoever holds it, a meaningful privacy consideration even though it poses no direct theft risk. Treating an xpub with reasonable care, rather than posting it publicly, is generally good practice for maintaining financial privacy.

xpub vs Individual Address: What Each Reveals

Shared Item What It Reveals Theft Risk
Single address Transactions at that one address only None
Extended public key (xpub) Entire wallet’s transaction history and balance None, but a larger privacy exposure
Private key or seed phrase Full access to funds Complete, immediate risk

Frequently Asked Questions

Can someone steal my funds if they get my xpub?

No, an xpub alone cannot authorize spending, though it does expose your full wallet balance and transaction history, which is a privacy risk worth taking seriously.

Should I share my xpub publicly to prove my holdings?

This carries real privacy tradeoffs, revealing your complete transaction history, and is generally discouraged unless you have a specific, deliberate reason for doing so.

Is an xpub the same across every wallet app?

The underlying standard is widely shared, but always verify compatibility between the specific wallet software generating and importing the xpub.
