What Is a Node? Understanding Bitcoin’s Network Computers

Every time someone says Bitcoin has no central server, what they really mean is that thousands of computers called nodes are all doing that job at once, together.

A Bitcoin node is simply a computer running Bitcoin’s software and keeping a copy of the blockchain. Anyone can run one on an ordinary laptop or a small device like a Raspberry Pi — there is no special permission required, no application to fill out, and no company to ask. That openness is the entire point: it means no single party controls who gets to participate in verifying the network.

A full node does three things continuously. First, it stores a complete copy of the blockchain, every transaction since the very first block in 2009. Second, it independently checks every new transaction and block against Bitcoin’s rules — correct signatures, no double-spending, no coins created out of thin air. Third, it relays valid transactions and blocks to other nodes it is connected to, spreading information across the network within seconds.

That middle step, independent verification, is what actually makes Bitcoin trustworthy. A node does not take a miner’s word that a block is valid. It checks the block itself, line by line, against the same rules every other node in the world is checking against. If a miner tried to sneak in an invalid transaction, every honest full node would simply reject that block outright, regardless of how much mining power was behind it.

This is also why running your own node matters for people who hold Bitcoin directly. Using someone else’s node (like a wallet app connecting to a company’s server) means trusting that company to tell you the truth about your balance and the network’s state. Running your own node removes that trust requirement entirely.

There is a difference between a full node and a mining node, and it trips up a lot of newcomers. Mining nodes compete to create new blocks and earn the block reward; that requires specialized hardware and significant electricity. Full nodes just verify and relay — no mining hardware needed, and they run fine on consumer devices.
