The 2017 Bitcoin Bull Run: How Bitcoin Hit $20,000

By December 2017, taxi drivers, office coworkers, and family members at holiday dinners across the world were suddenly talking about Bitcoin. It was the year crypto broke into mainstream awareness for the first time.

Bitcoin’s 2017 bull run took its price from around $900 at the start of the year to nearly $20,000 by mid-December — more than a 20-fold increase within twelve months, and by far the most attention Bitcoin had ever received from mainstream media, retail investors, and financial institutions.

Several distinct forces fed the rally simultaneously. The broader cryptocurrency market exploded alongside Bitcoin, with an enormous wave of new token launches through Initial Coin Offerings drawing retail speculative capital into crypto broadly. Financial infrastructure also matured: major derivatives exchanges launched Bitcoin futures contracts in December 2017.

The year was also marked by real technical tension within the Bitcoin community over how to scale the network, coming to a head in August 2017 with the Bitcoin Cash hard fork. That the price rally continued through and after this contentious split says something about how much speculative momentum was driving the market that year.

What followed the December 2017 peak was swift and brutal: Bitcoin lost roughly 80% of its value over the following year, falling below $3,500 by December 2018, a decline that became one of the most-cited examples of Bitcoin’s boom-bust volatility.

The 2017 cycle left a lasting cultural mark on crypto — it’s the year Bitcoin genuinely entered everyday conversation for the first time, setting expectations that would shape how the next several market cycles were understood and discussed.
