SharpLink CEO Opposes Ethereum’s EIP-8363, Warns of Zero Staking Yield

A corporate Ethereum holder is publicly pushing back against a proposal that could eventually zero out the exact yield that made holding ETH attractive to institutions in the first place.

SharpLink CEO Joseph Chalom came out against EIP-8363, a draft Ethereum proposal known as Tapered Issuance Burn that would burn a rising share of validator staking rewards as more ETH gets staked, reaching a full 100% burn, meaning zero net yield, once approximately 60.25 million ETH, roughly half of total supply, is staked.

Chaloms argument centers on institutional appeal specifically: native staking yield has been one of Ethereums clearest differentiators against Bitcoin for corporate treasury holders, and a proposal that could eliminate that yield entirely once staking participation crosses a certain threshold would remove a core part of the investment case that has attracted firms like SharpLink and Bitmine to accumulate large ETH positions.

EIP-8363 is still a draft proposal working through Ethereums standard improvement process, requiring broad developer and community consensus before any activation, so its current form isnt guaranteed to be what eventually ships, if it ships at all.

The pushback highlights a tension increasingly visible across Ethereums governance process: technical changes aimed at managing long-term token issuance and network economics can directly clash with the interests of large institutional holders who have built accumulation strategies around the networks current yield structure.
