Reinsurance Protocol Re Drops LayerZero for Chainlink CCIP After Security Review

A protocol managing nearly half a billion dollars just made a deliberate bet on which cross-chain infrastructure it trusts more, and the decision came directly out of a security review.

Re, an on-chain reinsurance protocol with more than $475 million in total value locked, decommissioned its LayerZero bridge and adopted Chainlink CCIP as its exclusive cross-chain infrastructure. The switch was cited as coming out of a security review, with Re pointing specifically to CCIP’s decentralized oracle network, 16 independent validator nodes, and SOC 2 Type 2 compliance as the deciding factors. The move is framed as connecting 8 blockchains into the reinsurance market through Re’s reUSD token.

Reinsurance is a genuinely unusual use case to see moving on-chain, since it involves large, long-duration financial commitments where counterparty and infrastructure risk both carry outsized consequences, making Re’s choice of cross-chain messaging layer a materially more consequential decision than it would be for a typical DeFi application moving smaller, shorter-duration value.

A protocol at this scale publicly switching away from one major cross-chain messaging provider to another, explicitly citing a security review rather than cost or performance, is a notable data point in the broader competition between cross-chain infrastructure providers, where security architecture increasingly appears to be the deciding factor for protocols handling meaningful value.
