Hunter Biden Is Launching a Memecoin Called LAPTOP — and Airdropping It to People Who Lost Money on TRUMP

Six years ago, a laptop dropped off at a Delaware repair shop and never picked up turned into one of the most litigated pieces of hardware in American political history. This week, that same laptop got a token.

Hunter Biden confirmed on his own X account that he is launching a memecoin called LAPTOP on September 9, deploying it on Base, the layer-2 network incubated by Coinbase. The name is not subtle, and neither is the target audience: a meaningful slice of the token’s supply is earmarked for wallets that lost money on TRUMP, the memecoin tied to the sitting president that launched days before his second inauguration and has since become a byword for retail traders getting wiped out by insider-heavy tokenomics.

The mechanics, once they came into focus, turned out to be more elaborate than a typical memecoin launch. LAPTOP has a total supply of one billion tokens. Founders — Biden among them — take 30%, locked for six months and released gradually over more than two years after that. Another 20%, or 200 million tokens, is set aside for airdrops: 20 million of those go specifically to wallets with documented negative profit-and-loss on TRUMP, with the rest split between subscribers to Biden’s Substack and a mailing list tied to journalist Andrew Callaghan. A further slice of supply is subject to conditional burns tied to future events — a Democrat winning the 2028 presidential election, bitcoin hitting a new all-time high, or LAPTOP’s market capitalization overtaking TRUMP’s — with unburned allocations reportedly redirected to charity instead.

The reaction from the crypto industry arrived faster than the token itself. Kraken briefly promoted the launch before deleting the post, then said it would still support trading once LAPTOP went live. Callaghan and an executive tied to Coinbase’s Base network moved to distance themselves publicly from the project shortly after it was announced. Trump himself called the coin “disgusting” and suggested it should be investigated, an unusually direct response from a president who has built out his own family’s crypto ventures over the past two years. Meanwhile, more than a dozen copycat tokens using the LAPTOP name appeared across other chains within hours, some generating real trading volume from confused or opportunistic buyers before the legitimate contract address was even confirmed.

Whatever LAPTOP turns out to be worth, its launch says something about where memecoins sit in American politics now: less a fringe curiosity and more a direct, adversarial extension of partisan rivalry, with real financial stakes attached to a joke that started as an opposition-research talking point. Readers newer to how token launches, supply schedules, and airdrops actually work can find a plain-language rundown in coin680’s Bitcoin Academy.

Memecoins are highly speculative assets with no fundamental backing and can lose most or all of their value quickly. This article is not financial advice — do your own research before buying, selling, or claiming any token.
