Hashdex Shuts Down DEFI, the First-Ever US Spot Bitcoin ETF Closure

Somewhere between IBITs $47 billion and this funds $14.7 million sits the clearest sign yet that not every Bitcoin ETF was built to survive.

Hashdex is shutting down DEFI, marking the first-ever closure of a US spot Bitcoin ETF. The funds last trading day is August 17, with a cash liquidating distribution expected around August 28. Assets had fallen to roughly $14.7 million, a rounding error next to BlackRocks IBIT, which holds more than $47 billion.

DEFIs history traces back to 2022, when it launched as the first 33 Act Bitcoin futures ETF, before converting to a spot structure in March 2024 alongside the broader wave of spot approvals. Despite that early-mover status, the fund never scaled meaningfully against larger, better-distributed competitors.

The closure highlights a dynamic thats become increasingly visible across the spot Bitcoin ETF category: a small number of funds, largely from the biggest asset managers, have captured the overwhelming majority of both assets and trading volume, leaving smaller or earlier entrants struggling to justify the ongoing cost of running a fund with minimal inflows.

Investors have also been chasing returns elsewhere this year, with AI-linked equities and infrastructure plays pulling capital that might otherwise have gone toward smaller crypto ETF products, adding competitive pressure on top of the concentration already favoring the largest issuers.
