Coinbase Gets CFTC Approval for Its Own US Derivatives Clearinghouse

Coinbase has received approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission for Coinbase Clearing LLC to operate as a US-based derivatives clearing organization, effective Monday, September 29. The approval hands Coinbase full control over its own derivatives infrastructure for the first time, rather than relying on a third-party clearinghouse for that function.

What the approval actually covers

The new clearinghouse license permits Coinbase to clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures, and swaps, with settlement available around the clock using native USDC as collateral. Leveraged products remain outside the scope of this specific approval, so the clearinghouse does not extend to margin-based derivatives trading.

Completing the derivatives stack

With this license, Coinbase now holds all three core pieces of US derivatives infrastructure under one roof: a futures broker through Coinbase Financial Markets Inc, an exchange through Coinbase Derivatives LLC, and now a clearinghouse through Coinbase Clearing LLC. Molly Abraham, Coinbase general counsel, described the approval as completing the company’s end-to-end derivatives infrastructure, allowing more regulated derivatives products to reach the market with native USDC collateral and continuous settlement.

Part of a wider industry pattern

Coinbase is not alone in pulling derivatives clearing in-house. Kraken made a similar move in May when it acquired Bitnomial, giving Kraken its own US-regulated futures exchange and clearinghouse rather than depending on outside clearing partners. Bringing clearing in-house generally reduces counterparty dependency and can shorten settlement times, both of which matter more as institutional derivatives volume on crypto-native platforms continues to grow.

What this means for the market

Owning the full derivatives stack gives Coinbase more control over product design, fee structure, and settlement speed than it had when clearing ran through outside partners. It also signals continued regulatory willingness at the CFTC to approve crypto-native firms for core financial market infrastructure roles that were historically reserved for traditional clearing organizations.

Frequently asked questions

Does this let Coinbase offer leveraged crypto derivatives to US retail traders? No, this specific approval covers fully collateralized futures, options on futures, and swaps, not leveraged products.

Is Coinbase Clearing LLC a separate company from the main Coinbase exchange? Yes, it operates as a distinct regulated entity alongside Coinbase Derivatives LLC and Coinbase Financial Markets Inc.
