Circle Acquires IBM’s Entire Blockchain Patent Portfolio

One company spent over a decade quietly filing blockchain patents while crypto was still a niche curiosity. Another company just bought nearly all of them in one move.

Circle Internet Group, the issuer of the USDC stablecoin, announced on July 27 that it has acquired IBM’s blockchain patent portfolio — comprising more than 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 issued patents worldwide. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The portfolio spans foundational blockchain technology developed across banking, financial services, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, supply chain verification, and secure cloud operations — much of it filed by IBM during the years it positioned itself as an early enterprise blockchain leader, well before most of today’s crypto-native companies existed.

With this acquisition, Circle becomes the largest holder of blockchain-related patents in the United States, a notable shift in intellectual property power within an industry where patent portfolios have historically mattered less than open-source contribution and network effects.

Circle says the expanded IP position will support its existing product lines: USDC itself, the Circle Payments Network, and Arc, an enterprise-focused blockchain the company has been building. Owning foundational patents across banking and financial infrastructure could give Circle leverage in future licensing negotiations or defensive protection as stablecoin infrastructure increasingly overlaps with traditional financial rails.

Circle and IBM also said they plan to explore additional commercial opportunities together going forward. One analyst response to the deal put it bluntly: IBM effectively capitulated on a decade of enterprise blockchain positioning, handing the accumulated intellectual property to a crypto-native stablecoin issuer instead.
