Cardano Reaches Key ETF-Eligibility Milestone on August 9

A single date on the calendar could determine whether Cardano joins the small club of cryptocurrencies with a US spot ETF, and that date is just one day away.

Cardano reaches a key ETF-eligibility milestone on August 9, when CMEs ADA futures contracts complete the required six-month window of regulated trading, unlocking the SECs streamlined path for listing a spot ETF without requiring a bespoke rule filing. If Grayscale or NYSE Arca activates a filing that day, the SECs standard 75-day review clock would point toward an October 23, 2026 decision deadline.

Bitwise and Canary Capital have also been positioning for potential ADA ETF filings, suggesting Cardano could see competing spot ETF applications emerge in fairly short succession once the CME futures eligibility window officially closes.

The streamlined pathway itself matters as much as Cardanos specific case: assets that clear six months of regulated futures trading on an exchange like CME avoid the lengthier, less predictable rule-change process that shaped the original spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETF approvals, making this milestone a template other altcoins are increasingly racing to reach.

Whether reaching eligibility translates into an actual approved, trading ETF still depends on issuers choosing to file and the SEC completing its review favorably, but clearing this specific regulatory threshold removes one of the largest structural obstacles that previously stood in the way.
