Bitcoin Mining Difficulty Keeps Falling as $19 Billion in AI Deals Lure Miners Away

Bitcoin is about to make life easier for miners who stick around — but a lot of them are leaving for AI money instead.

Bitcoin’s mining difficulty has been trending lower through 2026, falling 5% to 127.17 trillion at its July 11 adjustment — the network’s 14th retarget of the year — after hashrate dropped 7.9% in just ten days to 908 EH/s. A further adjustment of roughly 16% was expected around July 26, which would hand a considerably larger share of block rewards to whichever machines stay online.

Difficulty has now traced a pattern of lower highs all year: it peaked at 146.47 trillion on January 8, then topped out progressively lower at 138.97 trillion in April and 133.87 trillion in June — a sign that overall mining pressure has been easing rather than intensifying.

The reason isn’t a mystery: hashprice — miner revenue per unit of computing power — has risen 12.5% recently but remains 37.2% below its October 2025 peak, squeezing margins even as difficulty falls in miners’ favor. That’s pushing some of the industry’s largest operators to redirect sites toward AI computing instead, chasing roughly $19 billion in AI infrastructure deals rather than competing for thinner Bitcoin rewards.

A lower difficulty is normally read as bullish for the miners who remain, but when it’s driven partly by large players exiting for a completely different business, it says as much about AI’s economics right now as it does about Bitcoin’s.
