Base Surpasses 2025’s Full-Year Stablecoin Volume With Five Months Left in 2026

With nearly five months still left on the calendar, one Ethereum layer 2 network has already moved more stablecoin volume than it did in the entirety of the previous year.

Base, the Ethereum layer 2 network incubated by Coinbase, has processed $26.1 trillion in stablecoin volume so far in 2026, already surpassing 2025’s full-year total of $17.5 trillion with roughly five months still remaining before year-end. The figure underscores just how much stablecoin settlement activity has migrated toward faster, cheaper layer 2 infrastructure rather than staying on Ethereum’s base layer.

Base’s growth reflects a broader pattern across the layer 2 ecosystem this year, where lower transaction fees and faster confirmation times have made networks like Base increasingly attractive for high-frequency stablecoin activity, including everything from trading settlement to cross-border payment flows and automated on-chain financial applications.

Stablecoin transaction volume figures like this capture total value moved rather than unique economic activity specifically, meaning the same dollar of stablecoin value can contribute multiple times to the total as it moves through several transactions, but the scale of growth still reflects a genuine, substantial increase in on-chain stablecoin usage on the network.

Coinbase’s backing of Base has given the network a meaningful distribution advantage, with direct integration into Coinbase’s own products providing a straightforward on-ramp for both retail and institutional stablecoin activity that many competing layer 2 networks lack.
