Japan’s Lawson Expands Stablecoin Payment Pilot to USDC, USDT, and JPYC

Convenience store checkout lines aren’t where most people expect crypto adoption to actually happen — but that’s exactly where one Japanese retail giant is testing it.
Lawson, one of Japan’s largest convenience store chains, has expanded its stablecoin payment trial to include USDC, USDT, and the yen-pegged JPYC token, rolling the expanded pilot out through a second point-of-sale test at two Tokyo stores. The trial builds on Lawson’s earlier, narrower stablecoin payment experiment, now broadening both the number of accepted tokens and the physical retail footprint involved.
Why would a convenience store chain bother accepting stablecoins at all, when card and mobile payments already dominate Japanese retail? Stablecoin payments offer merchants a potential path to lower transaction fees compared to traditional card networks, along with near-instant settlement — advantages that matter even in a market like Japan where existing digital payment infrastructure is already highly developed.
The inclusion of JPYC alongside USDC and USDT is notable in its own right. JPYC is a yen-denominated stablecoin, meaning Japanese customers using it avoid the currency conversion exposure that comes with paying in a dollar-pegged token — a detail that matters for a retail use case where price stability in the local currency is the whole point.
This kind of retail pilot matters less for its immediate transaction volume, which is almost certainly modest at just two stores, and more as a real-world test of whether stablecoin payment rails can integrate cleanly with existing point-of-sale hardware and settlement workflows that a chain the size of Lawson actually depends on.
Japan has generally taken a more structured, licensing-based approach to stablecoin regulation than many other major markets, and a large retailer like Lawson running these pilots signals a degree of regulatory comfort that smaller, less risk-averse merchants might not yet have.
