What Is Network Propagation? How Blocks Spread Across Bitcoin

A miner in Iceland finds a valid Bitcoin block. Within seconds, a node in Singapore has heard about it too. How does information travel that fast across a network with no central broadcaster?

Network propagation is the process by which new transactions and blocks spread from node to node across Bitcoin’s peer-to-peer network until nearly every participant has received them. Each node that receives a new block or transaction relays it onward to the other nodes it’s connected to, spreading outward like ripples.

Why does propagation speed actually matter? Because the longer it takes a newly found block to reach the rest of the network, the more likely another miner, unaware the block already exists, finds a competing block at the same height — directly increasing the rate of orphan blocks and wasting honest miners’ effort.

This is precisely why serious mining operations care deeply about propagation speed. Technologies like compact block relay let nodes send a much smaller summary of a new block’s contents, since most transactions were likely already sitting in the receiving node’s own mempool, dramatically cutting the bandwidth and time needed.

Specialized networks built specifically for fast block relay between major mining pools have also emerged, minimizing the propagation delay between when a pool finds a block and when competing pools learn about it — since even a few seconds of delay can meaningfully affect a large pool’s orphan rate over time.

Propagation is a quieter, less-discussed part of Bitcoin’s infrastructure, but it’s foundational to keeping the network’s orphan rate low and its ten-minute block time target meaningful in practice, not just in theory.
