What Is a Block Reward? How Bitcoin Miners Get Paid

What is a block reward?

A block reward is the newly created Bitcoin a miner receives for successfully adding the next block to the blockchain — currently 3.125 BTC per block as of the most recent halving, plus whatever transaction fees are attached to the transactions included in that block.

Why does this exist at all? Bitcoin needed a way to both introduce new coins into circulation and pay miners for the computing work that secures the network, without a central authority printing currency or writing paychecks. The block reward solves both problems in one mechanism.

How is the amount decided? The block reward started at 50 BTC per block when Bitcoin launched in 2009, and it is cut in half on a fixed schedule roughly every four years, an event called the halving. It has already stepped down from 50 to 25, then 12.5, then 6.25, and now 3.125 BTC — hard-coded into the protocol, not a discretionary decision.

Does the reward ever run out? Yes, eventually. Because the reward keeps halving, it approaches but never quite reaches zero, and the total supply approaches Bitcoin’s hard cap of 21 million coins. Current projections put the final tiny fractions of new Bitcoin being mined around the year 2140.

Why should this matter to someone who isn’t a miner? The shrinking block reward is Bitcoin’s built-in scarcity mechanism. Each halving cuts the rate of new supply entering circulation in half overnight — a structural change fundamentally different from how central banks manage currency supply as an ongoing policy decision.
