Coinbase-Backed Crypto Group Warns of ‘Midterms Payback’ After CLARITY Act Vote Fails

Stand With Crypto, the Coinbase-backed advocacy group, is turning its September 15 disappointment into a November 2026 threat. After the Senate’s Digital Asset Market Clarity Act failed its cloture vote, the group’s executive director, Mason Lynaugh, said crypto voters have become “a durable, motivated voting bloc” capable of swinging key congressional races — and that the vote will be remembered.
The numbers behind that warning:
- 49-50 — the cloture vote tally that blocked the bill, eleven votes short of the 60 needed.
- 4 Republicans voted no alongside Democrats: Susan Collins (Maine), Josh Hawley (Missouri), Jerry Moran (Kansas), and Thom Tillis (North Carolina), who used a procedural no vote to preserve a path to reconsider the bill later.
- $189 million — what crypto companies had already spent on the 2026 midterm cycle as of this fall, according to political spending trackers, making the sector one of the largest corporate political donor blocs this cycle.
- Millions of registered “crypto voters” the group says it has organized through its Voter Hub platform, which grades candidates on their crypto voting records ahead of November.
Stand With Crypto says every senator’s vote on the cloture motion will be folded directly into its public candidate scorecards, the same tool the group has used since 2024 to steer its political spending toward crypto-friendly challengers and away from opponents. The group isn’t alone — crypto-aligned super PACs including Fairshake have amassed hundreds of millions of dollars in war chests specifically earmarked for the 2026 cycle, and industry figures have increasingly framed the CLARITY Act’s failure not as a dead end but as a campaign issue.
Whether the threat translates into actual seat losses in November remains to be seen — crypto voting blocs have shown mixed electoral impact in past cycles despite heavy spending. But the message from the industry’s most visible advocacy arm is unambiguous: lawmakers who blocked the bill should expect it to come up again, this time at the ballot box.
