US-listed spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs pulled in a combined $2.6 billion in net inflows for the week ending August 21, 2026, the strongest single week for the category since October 2025, and a sharp reversal from the prior week’s $392 million in net outflows.

The split leaned toward Bitcoin: spot Bitcoin ETFs took in $1.9 billion, while spot Ether ETFs added $697.2 million, both marking each asset’s strongest week of 2026 so far. The rush of capital tracked a fast move in spot prices, Bitcoin briefly traded above $79,000 on Friday, its largest weekly gain in two years, while Ethereum crossed $2,400. Both assets gained between 24% and 28% on the week.

Sentiment data moved just as fast: the Fear & Greed Index swung from a defensive reading into greed territory over the same stretch, consistent with a market that had been pricing in caution suddenly repricing for upside.

The scale of the reversal is what stands out. A single week of outflows followed immediately by the strongest inflow week of the year suggests institutional allocators were sitting on the sidelines waiting for a confirmed move rather than gradually building positions, once Bitcoin’s breakout looked real, capital came in fast and in size.

Even so, the rebound hasn’t been enough to erase the year so far. Both Bitcoin and Ether ETFs remain net negative on a year-to-date basis, on pace for their first full year of net outflows since spot ETFs launched, a reminder that one strong week, however large, doesn’t undo months of institutional caution built up earlier in 2026.
