Solana Cuts Slot Time to 350ms in First Step Toward 200ms Goal

Solana just shaved 50 milliseconds off its block time, and the number itself matters less than the plan it’s the first step of.
The network completed a mainnet upgrade cutting its target slot time from 400 to 350 milliseconds, the first of four planned 50-millisecond reductions under a proposal called SIMD-0525 that aims to eventually bring slot time down to 200 milliseconds. Each step in the sequence requires supermajority validator endorsement, roughly two-thirds of staked validators explicitly opting in, before it can activate, so this 350ms step alone doesn’t guarantee the later ones follow on any fixed timeline.
Faster slot times mean faster transaction confirmations, not higher overall throughput, an important distinction Solana has been explicit about. Running in parallel is Alpenglow, a separate consensus overhaul focused on finality speed specifically, how quickly a confirmed block becomes irreversible, rather than how quickly blocks get produced in the first place.
Splitting block production speed and finality speed into two separate engineering efforts, rather than one combined overhaul, is a deliberate way to de-risk a change to a network processing this much daily volume. The real test of SIMD-0525 comes with the next three reductions, each needing its own fresh round of validator buy-in.
