Brazil’s Central Bank Orders 24-Hour Delay on Large Crypto Transfers Abroad

Brazil just gave its exchanges a new, mandatory pause button, and it applies specifically to the moment users try to send meaningful money out of the country.

Brazil’s central bank now requires crypto exchanges to hold transfers above roughly $10,000, whether in reais or crypto, and whether sent in a single transaction or accumulated across the same day, for up to 24 hours before releasing funds abroad or to self-custody wallets. The rule is framed as an anti-fraud measure and takes effect January 1, 2027, giving exchanges several months to build the required holding and review infrastructure.

Exchanges retain the ability to release funds earlier than the full 24-hour window if their own risk review clears the transfer sooner, meaning the rule functions more as a mandatory checkpoint than a blanket delay applied uniformly to every qualifying transaction.

The threshold’s design, counting both single transactions and same-day cumulative totals, closes an obvious workaround where a user might otherwise split a large transfer into several smaller ones to stay under the limit, a structuring pattern regulators in traditional finance have targeted for decades under similar reporting and hold requirements.

Brazil has been one of Latin America’s more active crypto markets, and this rule places it alongside a broader global trend of regulators treating self-custody withdrawals specifically, not just exchange-to-exchange transfers, as a meaningful point of fraud and money-laundering risk worth mandatory friction.
