Grayscale’s Q2 Rebalance Puts BNB Ahead of Ethereum for the First Time

For the first time since the fund launched, Ethereum is no longer the biggest holding in Grayscales flagship smart contract platform fund.

Grayscales Q2 2026 rebalance, effective August 3 and announced August 5, made BNB the top-weighted asset in its Smart Contract Platform Fund at 30.6%, narrowly ahead of Ethereum at 29.47% and Solana at 29.15%. The same rebalancing cycle also touched Grayscales DeFi Fund, where UNI retained the top spot at 34.16%, and its AI Fund, where NEAR moved into the lead at 31.35%.

This marks the first time in the funds history that three separate Grayscale funds were rebalanced within the same quarter instead of the usual two, reflecting how much relative performance and market capitalization shifted across the underlying assets during the period.

BNB overtaking Ethereum in fund weighting is a symbolically significant shift given Ethereums long-standing position as the default reference asset for smart contract platforms, though Grayscales rebalancing methodology weights funds by relative market capitalization among included assets rather than reflecting any qualitative judgment about which network is technically superior.

Fund rebalances like this one matter beyond Grayscales own products specifically, since they offer a useful, methodology-driven snapshot of how relative market capitalization among major smart contract platforms has actually shifted, information thats harder to extract cleanly from day-to-day price movement alone.
