BitMEX to Shut Down Completely on September 23, 2026

One of the exchanges that helped invent crypto derivatives trading in the first place is now the one shutting the lights off.
BitMEX, the derivatives exchange that pioneered perpetual futures contracts and processed more than $3 trillion in cumulative trading volume over 11 years, announced it is closing entirely at 04:00 UTC on September 23, 2026. New account registrations have already stopped, position limits begin August 26, and several futures contracts including XRPU26, ADAU26, ETHU26, and XBTUSDTU26 are being delisted and settled around August 10.
Users who dont withdraw their funds before the shutdown face a $50 monthly fee or a 1% annual charge on remaining balances, a structure clearly designed to push remaining users toward closing out their positions well ahead of the final deadline rather than leaving assets parked indefinitely.
BitMEXs closure marks the end of an era for an exchange that arguably shaped how the entire industry thinks about leveraged crypto trading, having launched the first Bitcoin perpetual swap contract back in 2016, a product structure since copied by virtually every major derivatives exchange that followed.
The shutdown adds BitMEX to a growing list of early crypto-native exchanges that have wound down operations or been absorbed by larger, more heavily regulated competitors in recent years, part of a broader consolidation trend as regulatory compliance costs and competitive pressure from exchanges with deeper institutional backing continue reshaping the derivatives trading landscape.
