Solana Unveils Alpenglow Upgrade Targeting 150-Millisecond Finality

Solana wants to make blocks final in roughly the time it takes to blink, and the upgrade meant to get it there is now taking shape.

Solana revealed Alpenglow, a major consensus protocol upgrade that would replace the network’s current Proof of History and Tower BFT systems with a new architecture built around a component called Votor, capable of finalizing blocks in 100 to 150 milliseconds. The change represents one of the most significant architectural shifts to Solana’s core consensus mechanism since the network’s launch.

Proof of History, Solana’s original approach to ordering transactions without requiring nodes to constantly communicate timing information to each other, has been central to the network’s high-throughput design since day one. Alpenglow’s proposed replacement aims to push finality times down even further while maintaining the network’s core performance advantages.

Faster finality matters practically for use cases where near-instant settlement certainty is valuable, high-frequency trading, real-time payments, and gaming applications among them, since a shorter finality window reduces the practical delay between a transaction being submitted and it becoming irreversible.

A consensus-level change of this scale represents a significant undertaking for validator operators, who will need to upgrade their infrastructure in a coordinated fashion once the protocol reaches mainnet activation, a process that typically unfolds gradually across testnet validation before any mainnet rollout.
